Who Committed The Attacks?
Shortly after the attacks the hijackers that had committed the attacks were linked to a terrorist group known as Al-Qaeda. Osama Bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda, initially denied planning the attacks, however a few years later he took full responsibility for the attacks. The attacks are believed to have planned by Bin Laden, along with Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Mohammed Atef.
Motives Behind The Attacks
Osama Bin Laden stated various reasons for the attacks on America in his "Letter To America" which was written in 2002. Once of his reasons was American support of Israel. Bin Laden was against the growth of Israel and called the United States support of Israel a "crime". Another reason Al-Qaeda has given for the attacks is the sanctions placed on Iraq. Bin Laden also viewed the presence of the United States military in Saudi Arabia as a motive, because he believed this was a threat since Americans were too close to Mecca which is the holiest city in the Islam religion. In addition to these three reasons Al-Qaeda has also stated many other reasons for the attacks on America such as various times the west or America supported countries that attacked or opressed Muslims.
